Rally for Civil Unions with Ceremonies: March 29
Mar 26th, 2008 by Rebecca
We’re having another rally in support of the Civil Partnerships Bill on March 29 outside the Legislative Assembly at 1pm. This rally is our response to federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland’s threats to override the bill should it become law, which I’ve previously blogged about. It’s about getting up and saying to the ACT government that we’re behind them all the way, and we’ll support this bill all the way to the Assembly floor, no matter what McClelland says, and at the same time telling the federal government to back off and respect territory sovereignty and our LGBT community. We’re taking the opportunity to launch a petition to take to the Senate in the May sitting, for which we’re hoping to gather a few thousand signatures. I know some people have been reading this for the coverage of the campaign, so if you’re free on Saturday, please drop by and support us.
Speakers will include Education Minister Andrew Barr (representing ACT Labor), Deb Foskey MLA (from the ACT Greens), a representative from the AIDS Action Council, and yours truly (eep!) on behalf of the Campaign for Civil Unions.
