Comment on Victorian Court of Appeal rules on trans panic case by JJ http://burningwords.net/2008/08/15/victorian-court-of-appeal-rules-on-trans-panic-case/#comment-1860 JJ Sun, 24 Aug 2008 20:33:06 +0000 http://burningwords.net/?p=147#comment-1860 I've often had a recurring thought on why we don't have hate crimes legislation in this country. But it's never gone any further than a thought, so I've never looked any deeper into the thought to see if it was in fact true that we don't have any legislation. I've also thought whether it would take a reactionary measure to a case such as a Mathew Shepherd or Brandon Teena case for us to have any hate crimes legislation, but then our racial history has been quite different to that in the US - that's not to say it hasn't been as tragic or as easy, just not comparable. That said though, I do believe hate crimes legislation is to be pursued here. We shouldn't have to react to an incident and the tragic mistreatment of someone in the future. We should already have the legislation to protect all each and every one of us. BTW, I've just randomly come across your blog and you write well, so I like reading what you write. We are rather pleased to be rid of Buswell, and I'm thrilled that the election campaign will take place in the Olympic season, meaning we're unlikely to be blanketed with shonky WA politics everywhere we look. (Instead we get shonky Olympic politics, but that was going to happen either way.) Thanks for the Carnival shout-out!

This is a PERSON, not a thing, and she's dead and it was horrible and you all should care!" But I couldn't. A google search for JonBenet Ramsey will give you thousands upon thousands of pictures. A google search for Angie Zapata gave me none. And BFP is so right about the racial thing coming into play, too. So often when these murders happen, it's not just a trans person, but a trans woman (always!) almost always person of color and often sex worker.
